How We Got Our Name:
Mali Thai Restaurant
Here at Mali Thai Restaurant, we pride ourselves on offering flavourful and authentic Thai food to Vancouver. As an homage to Thailand, our restaurant is named after the Jasmine flower, which is referred to as “Mali” and is also the symbol of “mother.” The jasmine flower is commonly found in Thai gardens because of its fragrance and used in many different dishes.
In the culinary world, the connection to the jasmine flower is evident in dishes like Thai Jasmine Rice or Thai Hom Mali. Internationally, it has a reputation for its natural scent, tender texture and unique appearance. Because of Thailand’s sunny climate and soil makeup, it’s an excellent habitat for this aromatic rice. In fact, it is well-known throughout the world that the best Jasmine rice is found in Thailand. It was first discovered in the Cha-Cherng-Sao Province of Thailand in 1954. The grains are similar to long-grain rice but they are fragrant while cooking and have a pure white colour without artificial flavours and additional colours. Therefore, the name “Thai Hom Mali Rice” literally translates to “smelling like Jasmine flower.”
Thai Jasmine rice isn’t just known for its fragrance, it also has immense nutritional value as it is high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. It’s also an extremely versatile ingredient and can be used in a myriad of different ways and in many different dishes. For instance, it can be used for hot rice soup as a breakfast dish or to make fried rice for lunch. Many noodle dishes, like the ever popular Pad Thai, utilize rice flour for the noodles.
